Konarka Receives Well-Tech Innovation 2006 Award
Prestigious innovative technology award recognizes high performance power plastics for eco-friendliness, accessibility and quality of life
Lowell, Mass. – April 7, 2006 – Konarka Technologies, Inc., an innovator in developing and commercializing Power Plastic™ that converts light to energy, today announced that its high performance power plastics have been awarded the 2006 Well-Tech Award, recognizing innovative technologies and sustainability. The Award, given annually by Italian-based Well-Tech, goes to the invention that scores the highest in three categories, including eco-friendliness, accessibility and quality of life.
"We are honored to receive this prestigious innovative technology award," commented Howard Berke, chairman and chief executive officer, Konarka. "This award is a testament to Konarka's Power Plastic™ technology and our continual efforts to advance low cost sources of renewable power."
Konarka builds Power Plastic that converts light to energy – anywhere. The company develops and manufactures light-activated power plastic that is inexpensive, lightweight, flexible and versatile. This material makes it possible for devices, systems and structures to have their own low cost embedded sources of renewable power. By integrating energy generation functionality into everyday devices, Konarka allows manufacturers to offer truly wireless applications.
Selection criteria for the award include reduction in energy consumption, use of materials and renewable energy sources, ease of use for elderly persons, product safety, design and ease of understanding of the product, appropriate application of manufacturing and materials technology, as well as the qualitative, functional and aesthetic aspects. A panel, including leading Italian educators, government representatives and business executives, selects the winner. Well-Tech is a development team founded in 1999 by architect Chiara Cantono.
