Konarka’s CEO Captures a Top Honor at AlwaysOn™ Innovation Summit

Lowell, Mass. – August 23, 2004 – Konarka Technologies, Inc., an innovator in developing and manufacturing breakthrough products that convert light to energy, today announced Chairman and CEO Howard Berke was a top three finisher in the 2004 AlwaysOn (AO) Innovation Summit’s CEO pitch competition. With only five minutes to pitch his company, Berke delivered a high-scoring presentation about Konarka’s opportunity, go-to market strategy and innovative edge.

CEOs whose companies were in contention for the AO Top 100 Private Company List were eligible for this competition. Konarka is a two-time winner, having been recognized for its demonstrated leadership and innovation in two key areas: market traction measured by revenue or customer growth and new approaches and technologies that are likely to cause significant change to existing markets and well-established players.

“Competition to make the AO100 is fierce, and companies who are named to it can be proud of their leadership teams,” said Susan Ayers-Walker, chairman of the MIT/Stanford Venture Lab and organizer of the event. “But those who took on the CEO challenge, to come out to Stanford and go head-to-head with top-notch global companies, really showed some mettle. To finish in the top three is fantastic! It shows Howard and his team at Konarka have clearly identified a need and have a well developed plan to meet it. Konarka is one to keep an eye on in the coming year.”

Konarka is using its unique photovoltaic nanotechnology to create sources of renewable power for the next generation of communications devices, among other applications. By integrating low-cost energy generation functionality into the device itself, the company is enabling manufacturers to offer truly wireless electronics.

“Our success in the Innovation Summit competition demonstrates Konarka’s thorough understanding of the issues needing to be addressed, as well as the challenges emerging companies face in commercializing new technologies,” said Berke. “Our goal is to eliminate the need to plug in any device for a recharge. To do this, we are delivering materials that convert any kind of light – outdoor, indoor, low – into energy, enabling consumers to break away from the power grid and reduce their reliance on fossil fuels.”

The AO Innovation Summit was held July 13-15 at the Frances C. Arrillaga Alumni Center on the Stanford University Campus. The event featured more than 60 keynote-level speakers, 15 sessions, 32 CEO pitches, plus two days of conversation about what’s driving the next wave of innovation.
